The city
Budapest has 2 million inhabitants and was built from three cities: Buda and ‘Obuda on the Westside of the Danube and Pest, the real centre of Budapest, on the east side.Buda is located at the hilly west side of the Danube. The heart of Buda is the castle district, very busy and touristy at daytime but a great place to be after sunset. Obuda (Old Buda) is originally a baroque town near the Roman city Aquincum (close to Sziget), but not much of it has survived communism. Pest is on the eastside over the river. The main streets are the Grand Boulevard( the streets that make the half circle around Budapest centre from Margit bridge to Petofi bridge, tram 4-6) and the Andrassy ut (metro 1). Downtown Pest is located between the Chainbridge and the green bridge. The Vaci utca is the main shopping street. The district south of downtown Pest, around Raday Utca, is a student area with many small bars and restaurants. The part east of downtown, the Jewish quarter, is known for it’s lively underground scene. (Check the 2budapest map and legenda)

Public Transport
Public transport in Budapest-centre is very good. At the Grand Boulevard trams 4-6 depart every 2-5 minutes, at night, busses leave every 15 minutes. The metro works till 23.30. The HEV metro towards Sziget works all night during the Sziget period. It’s recommended to buy a weekly ticket. A weekly ticket costs about 4600 forint (16 euro) and provides access to all public transport for the whole week, day and night.

Taxi
It’s much cheaper to call and order a taxi then to pick one on the streets. The following taxi companies speak English and are cheap:

Fo taxi: +3612222222
Buda taxi: +3612333333
City taxi: +3612111111

Parking
We are working on a special guarded parking. More info soon. You can park for free at the square next to Hosok tere or in the neighbourhood of Romai part. We advice not to park too close to the festival, it’s too crowded and you risk a parking fee.

Drugs
Be careful. Harddrugs and softdrugs are illegal in Hungary.

Problem shooting
Budapest is a safe city. Still, always beware of pick-pockets, don't leave any valuables in your tent, don't take an unregistered taxi and don't take Hungarian girls for a drink when they ask you for one in the Vaci street, because they might take you to a special place where you have to pay 100 euro for a beer. These bars (all around Vaci utca) are on the blacklist:

  • Diamond Club
Budapest II district, Bimbo ut 3.
  • Eden Night Club
Budapest VI district, Andrassy ut. 54.
  • Galaxia etterem, bar
Budapest V district, Becsi utca 3.
  • La Dolce Vita
    Budapest V district, Oktober 6. utca 8.
  • Mercy Club and Lounge
Budapest VII district, Dohany utca 88.
  • Pigalle Night Club
Budapest VIII district, Kiss Jozsef utca 1-3.
  • Varoskozpont (accessible by outside elevator)
Budapest V district, Vaci utca 16.

In case there are problems with your ticket(s), you can go to the ‘problem ticket office’. If you are in any kind of trouble while in Hungary you can ask for help at general helpdesk near the entrance or the EU consul-desk, opposite Mainstage. For medical problems go to one of the first aid desks on the island. You can find the locations on the Sziget map in the programme book. Telephone number in case of emergency outside the festival island: 112
